Kimberley May Bolton is a Rotterdam-based art director, designer, and known as maverick. Her work is defined by an interplay of sobriety and softness, where intricate designs meet several materials and media. From weave design to digitally animated posters, her practice spans many forms. Her pieces challenge the boundaries of kitsch, working with intimacy and intuition, condoning absurd penalties to write unforeseen narratives. She seeks to unveil traditional arts and crafts forms from their old conservative image to regain a fresh outlook in which to move and create in an unrestrained way —with the wisdom of yesterday. In 2024, Kimberley founded Gisteren—the Dutch meaning for “yesterday”— a studio and log platform through which she collaborates with other specialised makers with whom she intends to create the underpinnings for a distinct school of thought.
